Annie Good was born November 4, 1921 in Verdun, Quebec. She was active as a dancer in her teens and consequently left school early; she went to work for Northern Electric Company in the early years of the war, where she did her part in war industry. While she enjoyed the work she did not want to continue that, instead preferring to play a more direct role in the war effort. As she saw so many young men go off to war she decided to do the same, joining the RCAF. She went through basic training but as she had “dancer” on her resume, she was recruited as an entertainer. She worked on a touring show called “All Clear”; they played locations in Canada to begin, often in conjunction with Victory Bond drives. Later they travelled to parts of the U.S. and even went overseas to Europe, entertaining the Canadian troops and airmen who were awaiting their return to Canada. Annie had two brothers overseas, and she was able to see them both during this time – it made her feel like she was “doing her bit”. She made her way back to Canada in 1947, and not long after she met Howard McNamara: they married and raised a family, finding their way in the rhythms of postwar Canadian life. Annie McNamara (nee Good) was interviewed by Scott Masters at her home in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec in October 2025.
