Soccer
On Thursday, May 18th the Senior Girls soccer team tied their last season game against The York School.
On May 24th, the Varsity Girls soccer team punched their ticket to the championship match of the CISAA playoffs, as they upended the Lakefield team , 2-1. Lakefield arguably had the better first half, but the Lions center backs, Jahnai Brown and Samantha Mintz, did well to prevent them from getting on the scoreboard. CPC’s first goal came from Julia Lee, to score her 8th goal of the season. The second half was much of the same, with both teams trading scoring opportunities. LCS was able to tie it up in the second half sending the game into overtime. After 10 minutes of overtime, LCS and CPC went to penalty shots. Keeper Alexa Gibson made a handful of saves. After 9 shots were taken, goalie Alexa Gibson scored the winning goal to send CPC into the finals. CPC will be facing TFS in the finals! Be sure to wish them luck.
Track and Field
The U14 Track and Field team competed in their Championship meet at York University. Congratulations to Elijah Fisher for winning the High Jump and the Shot Put events. Congratulations to the rest of the team for competing hard and achieving personal bests in multiple events!
Thursday, Zakayla Day-Burrell braved torrential rain to race the 200 meters at the Toronto Metros track meet. After running a strong preliminary race, Zakayla focused on the finals. With the weather worsening into a hurricane like gail, Zakayla raced against the best in the city, finishing an incredible fifth place out of all the competitors in her division. Congratulations to Zakayla on a great race in tough conditions. Well done!
Badminton
Wednesday, the U14 Badminton team traveled to Bayview Glen for their season’s playoffs. After some excellent efforts, the Lions took home first place in the boys Singles 1 division. Coaches Doherty, Young and Wan are all extremely proud of the progress the players made over the season.
Softball
The U14 Softball team finished their season as they competed in the league finals tournament in Richmond Hill.
In the semi finals, the boys took on Country Day School. The boys got off to a big start in the first inning, led by a massive moon shot home run by Ethan Gazer. Unfortunately, a combination of bad luck and sloppy play cost the boys the lead in the middle innings, and they went into the final frame down 8-3. The team saved the best for last, however, and in the top of the inning, they put up 6 runs, taking a slim 1 run lead into the final half inning. Defense sealed the win from that point out, capped off by an excellent catch in deep center field by Lorenzo Mancini to win the game and push the team into the finals.
In the finals, the boys played an excellent team from Sterling Hall. Despite making the game close in the middle innings, the boys ultimately came up a bit short, losing to an excellent squad in the championship game. Sloppy baserunning and defensive miscues this time came back to bite them. Nevertheless, the boys had a successful 2nd place season, and should be commended for their efforts this season. The future looks bright for softball at CPC.
Rugby
Wednesday afternoon the Junior Boys Rugby team traveled to Country Day School to play in the Finals of the CISAA Junior Boys Rugby season. All season long the boys have been working hard in practice and improving in every game. Despite their best efforts they went up against strong competition and unfortunately lost both of their games. Special mention goes to Jonas Weissland , Callum Braund, Rhys Malisch, and Cameron Frank. It has been a great season of Rugby and Coaches Newton, Birrell, and Pagano would like to thank the team for their hard work all season and look forward to next year.
The Senior Boys Rugby Team made it to the Final Four, and traveled to Lakefield College School where they competed against the three other top teams in the league. The first two matches were a bit rocky, even with Braden Harris scoring a try and a conversion, and some great tackling happening on the field. The third match was an exciting one, with Captain, Artie Shlykov, scoring a try against Greenwood College in the first minute of play. Greenwood had to double down their efforts to keep CPC at bay, as Ryan Mann ran over half the field to score a try, and Ty Ellis improved his rugby stats and scored a try in the second half. Even with these excellent plays and the amazing efforts of all the boys, Greenwood proved victorious. It was a fantastic season, and Coach Newton is proud of the entire team. Great work!
