Two championship competitions took place last week, with excellent results from CPC! Click for details and pictures.
Junior Boys Basketball
Over the weekend, the Jr. Boys Basketball team travelled to Royal St. George’s College for the playoffs. Matched up against the #1 seed in their first game, the team had an excellent start highlighted by the full court press of Aren Karshafian and Erik Usher. In the second quarter, Royal St. George’s turned a couple of turnovers into a quick ten point lead. Undaunted, David McCall stepped in to drain a pair of clutch threes which brought the teams even at the half. In the third quarter, Crestwood began to pull away thanks to the rebounding prowess of Kabier Izzeldin and the guard play of Tomer Tarsky and Emre Desiru. Ultimately, the hosts were no match for Crestwood’s versatility as the game ended with a 57-42 Crestwood win.
After a lengthy delay, the Jr. Boys met Greenwood College in the Championship game. Early foul trouble saw Coach Findlay go to his bench early and often. Logan Lim and Mehmet Hocaouglu stepped in to provide solid contributions and keep the game close go into the half. With only a three-point Crestwood lead at halftime, it was still anyone’s game. In the third quarter, Emre Desiru and Tomer Tarsky took the team on their shoulders scoring a herculean 16 of 18 points and securing an 11 point lead heading into the fourth. The win was secured by strong efforts from Edward Li, Jonah Eichler and Yale Zhang down the stretch. All told, the Jr. Boys Basketball team came away with a 62-42 win in the final game of the season. Congratulations to the Jr. Boys Basketball on their championship season! Special shout outs to Robert Altshuler, Josh Mason and Jacob Newman for the completion of a great season.
Varsity Swimming
The OFSAA Swimming Championship is a prestigious event within the Ontario High School community. Swimmers must post certain times in order to qualify, to then compete against some of the fastest swimmers in Ontario. This year, four boys represented CPC at this meet in Windsor. Congratulations to Matti MacLachlan, Andrew Gdanski, Joseph Zuckerman, and Alex Fallows for qualifying for OFSAA!
The four boys competed on Tuesday in the Open 200 Medley Relay. Joseph started off the relay, swimming his first ever 50 backstroke, and posting a strong time. Gdanski’s breaststroke was smooth and quick, closing the gap between their opponents in the next lane. Matti had fun swimming butterfly, easily swimming the 50 in 28 seconds. Finally, Alex brought the relay home swimming freestyle, keeping his calm, even though he was the youngest swimmer in the heat. Overall, the boys swam valiantly. Congratulations on a great swim!
On Wednesday, Matti swam his 2 individual events, 100 Free and 100 Back. Both were faster than his times at CISAA, and he qualified to swim them both again in the afternoon. His 100 back was extremely exciting to watch. Although tired from days of swimming, he held his technique together, and was able to post a time that was 6 tenths faster from the morning–and a seasonal best time! He placed 8th, putting CPC on the scoreboard, and earning himself a coveted OFSAA ribbon. Congratulations Matti! Your teammates, coaches, and teachers are so proud of you!
Thanks for the great season boys, and all swimmers. See you back in the pool in November!
