Sports Update

The Lions have another great week in sport!

U14 and Varsity Swimming

The U14 Swim Team had an impressive meet at the Etobicoke Olympium on Wednesday. Notable swimmers include: Monica Altshuler, Alice Shen, Sydney Zuckerman, Julian Vinizki and Taylor Kronick not only swam qualifying swims but also achieved their new personal best times. Although Vincent Li and Robert Muresan faced challenges throughout the day, both swimmers rose to the challenge and had a strong finish to their day.

Megan Pearlman placed first in 50m Backstroke, Bora Kutun came second in 50m Breaststroke, and Armin Selzner placed third in 50m Freestyle.  Justin Soberman keeps rising to the top as he placed second in his heat for 50m Breaststroke. Cheer us on as we move up to the championships on February 24th.

The Varsity Swim Team had another outstanding meet at The Manga Centre on Thursday. The day started off well with eleven swimmers in the 50 Free. Great races by all, with special recognition to Sam Douey, Michael Zhang, and Dean Sun for posting best times.

As we progressed to the 50 Breaststroke, Joseph Zuckerman earned himself 5th place, bringing his time down once again. Alex Fallows and Max Dolman swam a tight race with one another, and both placed in the top-20. The girls did just as well, with Kaitlyn Balter placing 12th, and Jess Levitt and Elizabeth Keane posting solid times.

Our reliable Grade 12s, Matti Maclachlan and Andrew Gdanski, made waves this meet. Matti won his 100 IM by out touching his opponent by 0.15 seconds, and Andrew dropped another second from his already speedy 100 Free time.

We also had Sarah Douey place 2nd in the 50 Backstroke, Marina Nevison place 9th in the 100 IM, and Ashley Collins place 13th in the 100 Free. It was truly a fantastic day, and we can’t wait for our Championship Meet in 2 weeks!

Senior Boys Basketball

The Senior Boys Basketball team had two fantastic games this week. On Monday afternoon the boys put on a strong effort against one of the top teams in the league, Bayview Glen. Unfortunately the hard effort was not enough, and the boys could not rally in the end. A great effort was given by every member of the team but special mention must go out to Ahmed Izzeldin,Tristan Lim, Sultan Salih, Josh Zweig, Matthew Hirshberg and Matthew Gionnas. On Wednesday the boys regrouped, and won a big game against Ridley College with the final score 55-41. It was a great team effort with Ahmed Izzelding scoring 28 points, Sultan Salih with 9 points off 3 pointers, and Mert Tutcu with pivotal baskets in the fourth quarter.

Open and Varsity Curling

The Open Curling Team secured its 6th win of the season this week at the Royal Curling Club. While 4 games remain to be played, last night’s win ensures that the Open Team will advance to the CISAA playoffs at the end of the season. Coach Hawkins would like to congratulated Daven Siu, Hyeun Jun Chang, Bowen Oyuang, Joseph Eisentraut, Owen Salter and Aaron Greenspan on a fantastic season thus far. Let’s keep the winning streak going!

For the third straight time, the Varsity Boys Curling game at the Cricket Club against TFS ended in a 5-4 score. Unfortunately, unlike the previous two times, it was Crestwood who came up on the losing end this time. Despite great play from all curlers, including an amazing raise-double-takeout from Adam Golden, the TFS squad was able to score two points in the final end to claim the victory.
