The U-14 Curling team travelled to East York C.C. last Friday to participate in the CISAA Curling Final Four championships. In the morning match, they played a tight game against Toronto Montessori School. They were up 5-1 heading into the last end, but it looked liked TMS was building toward a big score until second Amy McCulloch played a lovely hit and roll to get her team out of danger. Crestwood won the semifinal 5-2.
In the afternoon final, they played their archnemesis from Bayview Glen, who had won the championship in the previous two years. Despite the fact that we had lost twice to BVG already this year, our team came out strong and with a knowledge of the ice from the morning match. The turning point in the game came in the third end, when Amy McCulloch froze to a BVG rock on the button while vice Max Spillner played a delicate tap to lie 2. Skip Ally Sone shut down the scoring area with expertly placed guards that denied any opportunity for Bayview Glen to score, and Crestwood stole 4 to take a 7-1 lead. In end after end, lead Damien Mehilli placed his stones in places where the opponents had to chase them and allowed Crestwood to coast to an 11-1 victory to claim their first ever U-14 Curling championship banner! Mr. Jull is very proud of the whole team!
Last Friday – February 28th, the Varsity Girl’s Hockey team played in the CISAA Championship finals against Hillfield Strathallan College. As the respective first and second place teams in the division it was bound to be a close match. WIth both teams getting chances to score, the game was held scoreless until the middle of the second period. Leading the charge was Karianne Engelbert who scored off good teamwork and passing to open up the game for the girls. With a 1-0 lead going into the third period, there was an early goal scored by Neely Van Volsen to give the team some insurance. The team fought off two penalties and sustained their lead until the last two minutes where Crestwood looked to finish the game strong. Both Kaileigh Patience and Abigayle Poitras added goals to seal the game away with a 4-0 victory for Crestwood.
The team ended their season playing a total of 15 games and impressively went undefeated throughout it all! All of the coaches would like to thank the girls for all their hard work and dedication this season. We cannot wait to see what the future holds in store for this amazing group!
The U14 Boys Hockey team started their playoff run last Wednesday by playing the UCC Grade 7 team. It was the team’s final home game of the season. The boys turned in a dominant performance running away with a 9-0 victory and Paolo Frasca secured his 5th shut out of the season. This earned a birth in the U14 Final Four on Friday at St Mike’s.
The team took on St. Andrew’s in the semi finals. Prior to our game, St Mike’s had defeated UCC in the first semi finals so the boys knew who was waiting in the finals. Jack van Volsen got things rolling early with a goal on the first shift of the game. St. Andrew’s tied the game with less than a second left in the first and then took a 3-1 lead in the second. But the team was not done. Simon Mattson scored with 6:30 left to get the momentum rolling. Sean Doherty tied it a couple of minutes later and then Jack van Volsen sealed the victory with just over a minute left.
This led to the team taking on St Mike’s in the finals. SMC scored early but then Anthony Cristofario tied the game shortly after. However, SMC began to take the game over and CPC was unable to mount another comeback in this game. The boys played their hearts out and represented Crestwood very well. The coaches are extremely proud of their effort all season. Well done on a great season!
Congratulations to Megan Pearlman, who competed at the OFSAA Swim Championships on March 3rd. She was aggressive in her morning swim, securing herself a spot in finals in the afternoon. She swam her 100 breaststroke strategically, shaving off 1.2 seconds from her morning swim, and going an all time best time! She placed 5th in this event—out of all the swimmers in Ontario! Amazing job Megan, we wish you luck at the Provincial Championships this weekend!
