Sports Roundup (Jan. 30th)

This week, Varsity Girl’s Hockey team travelled to King City to play their rematch against The Country Day School. After a tough first game the girls came out energized ready to prove themselves. With excellent team play and some great individual efforts, the lady lions proved themselves to be too much for the other team to handle. There were many honourable mentions such as Neely Van Volsen getting her first hat-trick! Abigayle Poitras also scored two really nice goals to help widen the lead. Also, some great teamplay between Kaileigh Patience who gave a beautiful pass to Hanna Stefik who had a bullet shot going into the top corner.

On Wednesday the Varsity Girl’s Hockey Team had the opportunity to play an exhibition game in Buffalo against a strong Division 1 opponent – Nichols School. Despite being much younger and not having as many players, our girls proved why they are a top team. We started out with lots of excitement and made chances for ourselves using our speed and teamwork. As the game went on, the girls continued to play better and better without slowing down. They gave it their all and played a solid game with everyone doing their part. The final score ended in a 0-0 tie, special shout out goes out to Mya Lucifora for consistently being excellent in net and making big saves. All of the coaches are very proud of everyone and how we battled and persevered throughout the game.

Our girls will continue their regular season with back-to-back games on Tuesday as they play Bishop Strachan School at the old Maple Leafs Garden, then De La Salle for their home game on Wednesday.

On Monday afternoon, the Junior Boys Basketball team improved to 6-0 in CISAA action with a 94-43 victory at St. Mike’s. Despite missing several boys due to injuries and illness, the Lions were able to pounce on St. Mike’s early and never looked back.

Jamarion Carter was on fire from three-point range early on route to 13 total points, while Christian Gheoculet was the leading scorer on the day with 19 points. Kailon Nicholls pitched in 11 points along with several great assists. Off the bench, John Alpacar hit three three-pointers, and Gregory Angelakos showed a variety of skills on the way to 15 total points, mostly scored with his off-hand. Pharaoh Wendt played one of his best all-around games of the year with 9 points and 6 steals.

Crestwood’s Division 1 curling team was in action on Wednesday, against the undefeated squad from Bayview Glen. The boys got off to a slow start, and BVG was able to score 3 in the first end. However, Crestwood’s Ice Lions came roaring back in the 2nd and 3rd end. A game-saving draw by skip Will Dennison had Crestwood within 1 at the half-way point. Unfortunately, Bayview Glen was able to rebound and take the momentum back in the second half of the game, ultimately besting CPC by a final score of 7 to 2. The Division 1 team returns to competition next Tuesday for a match up against Saint Andrews that will have heavy implications on both teams’ playoff chances.

On Wednesday, the Crestwood’s Varsity Boys Hockey Team saw an outbreak of goal scoring against Country Day School. Aaron Little finally started hitting the net, and was rewarded with a five goal game. He was set up on many of the goals by line mate Christian Campanelli, who added a hat trick of his own. Late snipes by Jacob Hanning and Noah Cooney rounded off the 10-4 rout, and sent the many Crestwood fans in attendance home happy. Thank you to those who came out to support the squad in our final home game of the season!
