On Feb. 24th, the Junior Girls Volleyball team faced off with Toronto Montessori School. It was a match that kept everyone on the tips of their toes. Early on, the ladies took a comfortable lead, taking the first two sets with some great digs from Isabella Rigny and hits from Ella Okubasu. With just one more set to take the game, the team stumbled, losing two sets straight to TMS. With the odds stacked against them in a starting score of 0-8 in the 5th set, the ladies clawed back, fighting tooth and nail, point for point to finally win the game with a score of 16-14. Additional shoutouts go to Abigail McFarlane for the amazing comeback and Ella Lee O’Rourke, Abby Mintz and Taylor Howell for bringing the team spirit. The ladies advanced to the CISAA Final Four at Trafalgar Castle School.
The Jr. Girls Volleyball team traveled to Trafalgar Castle Wednesday, to compete in the CISAA Final Four. We faced off against The York School who had proven to be strong competitors. Our players showed no mercy and played their best game making the TYS work for every point. Each team won a set demonstrating the determination to win for both teams. It was by far the best playing we have seen from our team all season with amazing blocks from Ella Okubasu, and Chiara Cordon. Outstanding digs from Abby Mintz and on more than one occasion both Taige Motasas-Adderly and Isabelle Rigny were so determined to keep the ball in play they had total disregard for their well being. Our setters Bryn and Chiara were instrumental in getting the ball to our hitters so Ella Lee O’Rourke, Taylor Howell, and Abigail McFarlaine could smash it over the net. Despite losing in the 4th set our lions were positive, played with heart and made their coaches extremely proud. Well done ladies and thank you for the great season!
Also on Feb. 24th, the U14 Girls Volleyball team travelled to TMS for their first playoff game against St. John’s Kilmonarch. Despite not having played a game in a while, the girls showed skill and quick thoughts on the court, pulling off an impressive win against St. John’s in two sets to win the game, qualifying us for the next playoff game.
In Game 2, we took on Montcrest School, who is currently placed 3rd in the league. With some heavy-hitting serves, hits and defense, it was a well-matched and challenging game. We lost the first match, but then came back with some tenacity and team work to take the second match all the way past a score of 30. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to win, so we lost the game in the end, 31 to 29.
Ms. Reinsma and Ms. Doble want to thank all of the girls for an incredible season. Your growth, development and teamwork this season have been so great to watch. We look forward to what future years of volleyball at CPC have in store!
The Senior Boys Basketball team plays their first OSBA playoff game on Feb. 25th, after school at Crestwood. They will be facing off against Ridley College at 3:30.
On the afternoon of Feb. 26th, our U14 D3 Boys Basketball team travelled to the lower school to play in their quarter final game. With great effort on both ends of the court, the boys pulled out a squeaker, beating TCS 45-43. Special mention must go out to Mikkel Campbell, Griffin Brown, Noah Kassam , Ryan Michaels and Eddie Segal. The boys are excited for an opportunity this Sat as they play in the Semi- Finals. Wish them luck as they try to bring another championship to our school.
The Crestwood Junior Boys D1 Basketball team advanced to the CISAA finals with an 88-36 win over Crescent on Wednesday afternoon. The Lions led by only 6 points after a back and forth first quarter before opening up a 21 point lead at half-time. The bench came in and rolled in the second half, scoring 32 of 47 total points on the way to an 88-36 victory.
Four players were in double-digits, led by Elias Papaconstantinos with 15 and Matai Baptiste with 14. Mikkel Tyne added 12 points, while Gabriel Quayson hit 4 fourth quarter 3s on the way to 12 points himself. The Lions will now take on the winner of St. Andrew’s College and Upper Canada College in the championship finals on Saturday at 11am.
Congratulations to our U14 Swimmers, who competed at the championships on Feb. 26th! Lilly Kauffman was our top finisher, posting two personal best times, and placing 6th in her 50 Free and 100 Free. Victoria Muchair also had a fantastic day, dropping time in all three of her events! The boys on the team dropped lots of time in their events as well, with Sebastian Yanquelevech dropping 5 seconds in his 50 Free, and William Kirwan dropping 6 seconds in his 50 Back. Kate Pan went a best time in her 50 Breaststroke, and almost broke 1:30 for her 100 IM. Finally, our relay team placed 5th, consisting of Victoria, Sebastian, Lilly, and Kate. Awesome job swimmers!
The Varsity Boys Hockey team finished their season in dramatic fashion on Wednesday, at Leaside Arena against a mature and skilled Greenwood team. Goalie Jacob Hodgson was a warrior in net battling through a nagging hamstring injury until he could no longer stand. Our own emergency backup stepped up, as Noah Cooney strapped on the pads and gave his best David Ayres impression. The team worked valiantly throughout the rest of the game to keep what should have been a sure thing, blowout loss as a close game. MVP Christian Campanelli led the way on the scoresheet again, contributing on 1 goal and 3 assists. Nathan McLean scored 2 and Sam Li, Jake Katz, Aaron little each contributed one in a losing effort. The coaches are proud of the resilience that the team showed in these unusual circumstances, and thank the group for the effort they gave this season.
On Thursday, the Varsity Girl’s Hockey team played their first playoff game vs Country Day School. The opposing team came hungry to knock down the undefeated Crestwood Lions, but our girls battled hard and persevered. We started the scoring with a goal by Alana Burgess and kept on the attack. Adding onto the scoring was Neely Van Volsen with a tip-in and a late third period goal by Karianne Engelbert, the girls took the game with a score of 3-1.
