Varsity Track
The Varsity Track Team had their first meet on Wednesday at York University. Congratulations to Ryan Mann, Ty Ellis, Jahnai Brown, Jimmy Liu, Joe Han, Alex VonWersbe, and Robert McHale for representing CPC so well.
Jahnai was our only female athlete, but was able to put points on the board for all her events. She placed 9th in the 60m dash, and 2nd in both long and triple jump.
Ryan led our men’s team by posting a great time in the 400m dash and placing 10th. Both he and Ty jumped well over 4m for their long jump, and clocked under 8.4 seconds for the 60m dash.
Our Junior Boys performed well in their 400m dash, posting solid times for the first meet of the season.
Chess
Ten members of Crestwood’s Chess Club travelled to the University of Toronto Schools last Friday for the Toronto Secondary School Team Chess Championship. Our Junior and Senior teams each played four matches against teams from schools around the GTA.
Some highlights included Sean McNamara and Richard Chen each winning two of their matches, and the Junior team as a whole winning their final round against Richview Collegiate, with Russell Kaufman tallying the winning point.
The high point of the day, however, came in the Senior team’s final round, when captain Daven Siu drew a huge crowd to watch the conclusion of his match against the captain of the William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate squad. There were ooh’s and aah’s on both sides, and, although Daven did not end up victorious, at the end of the match, the crowd erupted in applause for both players, commending them each on a well-played game.
Crestwood Chess players continue with ladder games on Tuesday at lunch, with only three more weeks of matches before the playoffs begin for our own Crestwood Chess Championship.
