Dear Parents,
It’s hard to believe our first month of school has come to an end! September has been jam packed with student and parent events and we have enjoyed getting to reconnect with you all in person.
Last week we had our Terry Fox Run and we loved being able to run all together as a school. All our students showed determination and resilience as they continued Terry’s run to raise awareness for cancer. Thank you to the Phys Ed department for organizing the run and encouraging us all to push our physical limits and keep on going!
This week we were thrilled to welcome parents into our buildings for Curriculum Nights. A big thank you to all our teachers for preparing informative and engaging presentations. We hope you enjoyed being in your child’s space in their classroom and hearing about all the exciting learning opportunities that lie ahead this year.
Today we were able to recognize Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We purchased shirts for all staff and students, and it was powerful to see a sea of orange out on the playground and in the classrooms. The orange shirts represent our respect for Indigenous culture and celebrate the unique history and background for all Indigenous groups. Students wrote their own slogans for Orange Shirt Day, revolving around the themes of “every child matters” and “what school should feel like”. Students in Grades 3-6 participated in an assembly presented by the Community Service Team. In the assembly, students learned about the history of residential schools in Canada, and celebrated contributions of Indigenous people in the arts, music, and environmental advocacy. We hope this day is the springboard for important conversations about Canada’s history and beginning to reconcile these historical events.
As the weather continues to cool, we ask you to ensure your children come to school dressed warmly for outdoor play. Please make sure you label all your child’s clothing so that lost items can be returned to their rightful owner. The Lost and Found bins are starting to fill up with items that are nameless.
With October on the horizon, we are looking forward to our sports teams competing in some more games, lots of field trips and more opportunities to learn and grow as a community. We wish you all a happy and healthy October weekend!
