Dear Parents,
It’s been a fun, jam packed month at Crestwood School! Students and teachers have settled in beautifully to our Crestwood routines and expectations. We have loved seeing students engaged in their learning, socializing at recess and participating in new experiences.
This past week was filled with special events! We had our first Toonie Tuesday and pizza lunch. It was great to see students express their unique styles in their non-uniform attire! Then on Wednesday, we had a gorgeous day for our Terry Fox Run. A big thank you to Mr. Cooper and Ms. Brenzel for organizing the run! Students showed perseverance as they pushed themselves through the course in Terry’s honour. On Thursday, we observed the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation by wearing our orange shirts and learning about indigenous culture and the difficult history of the residential school system. Students discussed what Orange Shirt Day means to them, and explored the importance of inclusivity and celebrating diversity.
We have some blossoming geography buffs in Grade 3! The students are learning about the different regions of Ontario. As well as studying Ontario’s physical features, the Grade 3s are learning about farming, trade, and the connections between rural and urban communities.
In the Junior Division, we are working on learning about ourselves; our learning style, our identities and the value we bring to the world. We’ve also talked about how to take care of ourselves and find ways to bring more joy into our lives and the lives of those around us. We hope to create a community of students who feel confident in themselves and look to compliment and lift up their peers.
On September 20th, the Grade 5 and 6 students had the opportunity to participate in Student Vote 2021. A big thank you to Lindsay Pembridge for taking the lead on this exciting civil action activity. Students got to experience our democratic system first hand and recognized the enormous privilege and responsibility that comes with casting a vote.
Next week we will be reviewing our emergency response procedure plans. We will practice with the students what to do in case of fire or other possible emergencies.
A quick note about “poppits”… we are finding it very difficult with so many students bringing poppits and using them in class. We will be letting students know they can use them at recess but they cannot be seen or used in classes. We thank you in advance for your support with this new rule (and if you don’t know what poppits are – yay you!)
We can’t believe it’s already October! Looking forward to a fabulous month of learning and growing. Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!
