Riva Grosman was born May 17, 1926 in Poland (present-day Belarus). Riva had three sisters and her parents, and they were well off for the time as her father was a lumber merchant. Because of this Riva and her sisters went to a private school. At the beginning of the war, Riva and her family were transported to the Osmeana ghetto, where they began to feel the harshness of the impending Shoah. From there, Riva was transported to several labour camps, including Bergen Belsen, where she was liberated by the British. After the war Riva married and emigrated to Israel at the beginning of 1948. She and her husband had two children there, and then in 1958 came to Canada. We first met Riva at Baycrest’s Cafe Europa, and then in 2019 Scott Masters and American researcher Emily Putzke visited her at her home in Toronto.
