Mary Cameron-Kelly was born January 5, 1962 in North Sydney, in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Her father had served in the CAF during the Korean War, and she made the decision to enlist herself after she completed high school. Her air force career began when she became an airframe technician, and at this time Mary was studying to earn her civilian pilot’s license, which she did – at the same time placing second in the prestigious Webster Competition. Then Mary decided to earn her air force wings, and she began training on CAF aircraft. She ended up being involved in many types of missions: reconnaissance and surveillance, Far North and fishery patrols, drug interdiction, anti-submarine warfare, and search and rescue. Many of these missions were flown on Aurora aircraft, but Mary has had the chance to fly many planes and to see changing CAF technology firsthand. She has also been able to see some amazing places and to meet some fascinating people. She has also won an array of awards, including the Elsie McGill Award – and she even has her own postage stamp! Crestwood students were able to zoom with Mary Cameron-Kelly in September 2021.
