Helen Berkovitz was born in 1921 in Tacsava, Czechoslovakia. The eldest of three sisters, Helen lost both parents in Auschwitz and was interned with her sisters in Bergen-Belsen and Theresientadt. After liberation, Helen met her husband at a collection point for the camps near the Austrian border, and they went through the DP camp life together as they were forced to travel between several camps located in Hungary and Austria. Although it at times it seemed like there was no hope in the life, Helen kept going with her brave heart that always believed in God and had hope. She moved to Canada in 1957 with her husband and while living in Canada, the couple had two children, Anne and George. Helen moved to Baycrest a few years ago, where she was interviewed in January of 2018 by Crestwood students.
