Meet the Teacher: Steven Vovk
Subject: History, Geograph, Careers and Civics
Grades: 7 – 10
Steven Vovk grew up in Hamilton. He and his wife of 11 years were university sweethearts. They have a little girl. Steven’s parents are retired world travellers and his brother is a successful author and professor at McMaster.
In his spare time, Mr. Vovk likes to travel and spend time with family and his faith community. He also does advocacy work for people with special needs and disabilities.
Steven was motivated to become a teacher by 2 things. One was his high school history teacher, Doug Massey. The second was his experience when asked to tutor one of his martial arts students. This child had had a lot of troubles in and out of the classroom. He was in grade 5, but his levels registered at Kindergarten. He was so smart. In a short time, with just a little extra help from a lot of people, he was getting marks above grade level. The look on his face when he realized he was worth something and that he was smart inspired Steven to become a teacher.
Mr. Vovk is excited to be at Crestwood. He has searched for a long time to find a school that values education and teaching the way he does and hopes this will be his forever home.
His secret talent? He actually held 3 black belts in various martial arts!
