Meet the Teacher: Jason Hawkins
Subject: Social Studies
Grades: 9 – 12
Mr. Hawkins grew up in Toronto, but both of his parents came from small towns. His mother grew up in a village of 700 people, where her family published the local newspaper (“The Grand Valley Star and Vidette”). His father grew up in Trenton, Ontario, where both of his parents taught at the local high school. Jason and his brother had the unique and fantastic opportunity to grow up in a family rooted in small town values, but with all the opportunities and possibilities of Toronto at their doorstep.Today, he lives in Leaside with his lovely wife- a drama teacher- and their two cats. In his spare time, he likes to curl, travel and read as much as possible.
Mr. Hawkins got tired of people saying that Canadian history was boring. In becoming a teacher, he wanted to save future generations from this mistaken thinking. One funny experience he recalls at Crestwood took place during a Hallowe’en costume contest. The winner was decided by a footrace between Godzilla and Jesus Christ. Godzilla won, but apparently it was a very close race.
Not surprisingly, as a history teacher, Mr. Hawkins is a very good scrapbooker.
