The success of Crestwood’s student-athletes is being seen during play and study. April 4, 2018, Crestwood Preparatory College had the honour to have a Guinness Book of World Records holder and Harlem Globetrotter, Zeus McClurkin visit our very own Elijah Fisher and the entire grade 7 and 8 student body. This was a welcomed surprise that centred around the importance of building a positive attitude and a resilient personality. The iconic Harlem Globetrotter’s new community outreach program, “The ABCs of Bullying Prevention,” is designed to support the globe push to end bullying and violence in all forms.
Zeus spoke candidly about his struggle, he was always smaller teen which led to him being cut from every basketball team he tried out for from grades 7 to 10. His college career lacked lustre. He played limited minutes in a Division 2 program and then had to beat out 30 other athletes as a walk-on at North Caroline A&T State University where he earned his undergraduate degree in business management and a master’s degree in marketing and communication from Franklin University.
Now, despite being 6’8″, Zeus has been diagnosed with exercise-induced asthma, a narrowing of the airways in the lungs that is triggered by strenuous exercise. This diagnoses would leave many to only dreaming of playing any sport at a competitive level nevermind professionally, yet Zeus’ plays on. Zeus is an example that a fighting spirit in the midst of adversity cannot be defeated. Each student was encouraged to join the Harlem Globetrotters as Ambassadors of Goodwill, the program focuses on ACTION, BRAVERY and COMPASSION.
