The Grade 3’s visited the Ontario Science Centre this week to assess the effects of strong and stable structures on society and the environment. We already know that a structure is a supporting framework, with a definite size, shape, and purpose, that holds a load. At the Science center we identified structures in the natural environment and in the built environment and we experimented with their ability to support a load. We made arch bridges, paper bridges, and even a bridge that supported the weight of a student. In our workshop, we identified the properties of materials that need to be considered when building structures and we used tension and compression to create strong, stable buildings. Thank you to our parent volunteers for helping out during all of our hands-on experiments.
