Grade 12 Students Make Aspirin

Students in Grade 12 Chemistry completed their Organic Chemistry unit by making a common medication used to treat pain, fever and inflammation called acetylsalicylic acid, more commonly known as Aspirin. Over the course of three days, students completed a traditional organic chemistry lab where they were responsible for synthesizing (creating) aspirin by performing an esterification reaction, purifying the aspirin using crystallization and then testing its purity.
