Edible Soil?

In 3A, we learned that Soil is so much more than what’s under our grass. Each layer of earth is defined by its own “horizon”. These horizons run parallel to the ground and serve up distinct characteristics that aid the layers above and below. When a vertical section of these many horizons is taken, it’s known as a soil profile. 3A created their very own edible soil profiles. First we put an Oreo cookie on the bottom of a cup to represent the Bedrock.  Next, we added a mixture of chocolate and butterscotch chips as the Parent Material. Then, chocolate pudding was spooned into our cups to show the rich Subsoil. On top of the subsoil goes the crushed up Oreos, portraying Topsoil. Finally, we stuck gummy worms out of the topsoil and topped our profiles off with a green shredded coconut to make it look like Organic Matter.  What a yummy way to learn about soil and how wonderful it is for the plants that live on our Earth!
