Swimming
The swim team had an excellent meet last Wednesday at the Markham Pan Am Centre. 62% of all races swum were personal best times, which is amazing at this point in the season. Swimmers that swam a perfect day were Martin Chang, Maggie Funnell, Matthew Laslop, Thomas Li, Jack Magan, Will Magan, Megan Pearlman, Janell Sun, Chloe Werkin, Tony Wu, Derek Xu, and Sydney Zuckerman. Top 2 finishers were Sarah Douey and Megan Pearlman, and a special mention goes to James Gillingham, for dropping a whopping 13 seconds in his 100 free. Megan, Matthew, Jack, and Will swam under the time standard to qualify for OFSAA this March. They’ll just need to swim this well again at the Championship meet, to secure their spot at this prestigious meet! Great work to all, your coaches are very proud!
Basketball
The Crestwood Junior Prep Boys Basketball team picked up 4 big wins last weekend at the final National Junior Circuit showcase. The 4 wins moved the Junior Lions to 12-0 in NJC showcases, the only undefeated team left on the National Junior Circuit. Crestwood defeated St. Marcellinus 95-70, Pineridge 111-96, Thornlea 103-94, and London Basketball Academy 114-108. The win over Thornlea was an especially big victory, as Thornlea was also undefeated in NJC play heading into the contest. The Junior Lions went on a 39 to 10 run over the final 11 minutes of the game to come back from a 20 point deficit. Over the weekend, Elijah Fisher earned 3 Game MVP honors and Immanuel Oludele received 1 MVP award. Mikkel Tyne and Kailon Nicholls both averaged double digit points over the weekend, while many other players provided big moments over the weekend as well!
The Junior Boys’ Basketball team lost their first CISAA game of the season last Tuesday against Crescent by a score of 54-51. Injuries and sickness left the boys short-handed, and the Lions couldn’t quite come up with the defensive stops needed to pick up a victory. Immanuel Oludele led the way with 18 points, while Kailon Nicholls added 14. Christian Gheoculet scored 10 points and Zack Graff pitched in 5 points before an injury forced him off in the 4th quarter.
The Junior Boys D2 Basketball team won their first game of the season last Tuesday against Lakefield College. In a close first half, Jamie McGregor came out shooting, making 4 of 6 3pt shots on his way to 12 points. Crestwood led 21-20 at the half. In the second half, great team basketball and excellent defence helped secure a well deserved 42-36 victory. Rocky Wang led all scorers with 13pts, but the whole team showed great desire and effort to register their first win.
Last Tuesday night our Lady Lions took the floor against a solid Durham Prep team. Our Lions started off the game playing inspired basketball which led to a huge lead by the end of the first quarter. Even with the large lead, we continued to play at a pace that was too much for Durham Prep. The final score was 91-42. Leading scorers were Shayeann Day-Wilson and Aaliyah Edwards.
Curling
Two of Crestwood’s curling teams took the ice at Donalda last Monday afternoon for a pair of games against the squads from Havergal. In their season debut, the Varsity Boys’ team, skipped by Arjun Anand were up against a very experienced Havergal squad. However, due to some fantastic shots from all team members, Crestwood was leading by two after 3 ends. Unfortunately, Havergal rallied back to take the final three ends, and won the game 6-3. After being on the wrong end of a lopsided score the previous week, the Open Team had a dominating performance in Monday’s game. All curlers were firing on all cylinders, and Crestwood took the game 7-1.
The U-14 Curling team opened its season last Monday night and took two points against the defending champions from Bayview Glen. Crestwood’s team, skipped by Ally Sone, worked hard on its goals, but lost the game 12-2.
Last Wednesday, our Varsity Boys played Bayview Glen in a challenging game. Skip Arjun Anand and Second Oliver Smith made some great draw shots to help the team score in early ends and put us ahead at the halfway mark. However, though our boys fought hard, our opposition rallied in the second half to take the win. Special mention to Snow Ren who, in his first year of curling, is already showing tactical strength in the Vice position which will help grow our team going forward.
Volleyball
The U14 Girls’ Volleyball team had their first tri-meet of the last Wednesday at Pickering College. The CPC ladies brought their energy and enthusiasm for our first game against St. John’s Kilmarnock and won it in two games, scoring 25-12 in the first round and 25-22 in the second round, with some impressive bumps, sets and spikes. We continued to bring our energy into the second game against Pickering College. We won the first match 27-25, but in the second match, despite working hard, we lost 12-25. Pushing it into a third match, we tried our best but missed getting the ball back to the other side after Pickering was able to return it on several plays. Unfortunately, we couldn’t quite pull it together in the final game, where Pickering beat us 25-17. Shout outs to Taylor Howell for her leadership on the court and hits, and Taija Sta. Maria for her amazing hits and hustle.
On Wednesday, the Senior Girls’ Volleyball team played two matches. Facing off against Rosseau Lake first, our ladies dominated and won in straight sets. The game against TMS pitted the only two undefeated teams against each other. Our ladies came up short in this first meeting, but both games were close fought affairs with scores of 25-21 and 25-20. With a record of 4 wins and 1 defeated!
Hockey
The U14 hockey team fell short in their downtown matchup last Wednesday afternoon against UCC. The team was up against a much bigger opponent and had a very short bench but still played one of their best games of the year. Anthony Cristoforo led the way on the score sheet with 2 beauties, while Aydin Ansari set the tone for character with his shot blocking and no-quit attitude. A short handed 5 on 3 goal by Sean Doherty rounded out the Lion scoring in a game that the team should be very proud of.
