CPC Swimmers Just Keep Swimming to Personal Bests!

Swimming

It was an early start to the Wednesday.  We hadn’t had a chance to get our practice on.  The water was cold.  So cold.  Then things started to change when Zach Brown zapped through his 50m Freestyle and dropped 5 seconds from his personal best time.  Even after an uncertain start, Amy Cai placed third in her heat in 50m Freestyle.  To make things even better, Benjamin Davidson and Chloe Werkin not only achieved their personal best but also battled for the first place.  The best part of the day was that every swimmer walked out of the pool achieving their personal best time.  Extra thanks to Jordan Nikolov for being our timer for the day.  Great work, swimmers!

The Varsity Swim Team had a very successful meet Wednesday, despite being unable to train in the water since before the break. Thanks to our dryland practices, mental toughness, and race strategies, the team was able to post 21 personal best times! Shout outs go to Greg Quon for breaking 40 seconds in his 50 Free, Robert Muresan for dropping almost 10 seconds in his 50 Free, Alex Fallows for his stellar 100 Free, and Megan Pearlman for earning one gold and two silvers in her events.

Curling

Our Varsity Boys, Open, and U14 teams returned to the ice for the first time since the break, playing games against SAC, Havergal, and Montcrest. They played with skill and fought hard against their worthy opponents. Though none were ultimately triumphant, the Varsity Boys and U14 teams kept things close and were in it until the end, while the Open team still managed to take points in two out of six ends against the very experienced Havergal team.  Great effort, curlers!

The Open Curling team traveled to Richmond Hill on Wednesday evening to face off against the rink from Toronto Montessori School. The game was a roller coaster of excitement as the two evenly matched squads traded ends back and forth. In the final end, down two, skip William Dennison had to hit an extremely difficult- some might say impossible- shot to tie the game. To the amazement of the crowd, Will’s double raise was spot on and tied the game. In a tie breaking draw to the button, TMS inched out Crestwood to take the win. While a victory would have been nice, Peter, Sophia, Lyndsay and Will should be extremely proud of their play in what may be prove to be the most exciting game of the season.

Basketball

The U14 Boys’ Basketball team travelled to UCC Wednesday to take home yet another win this season!  It was our toughest game yet, but our Crestwood Lions worked hard every quarter to make sure we left undefeated with a score of 76-65.  Special mention to Elijah Fisher who played the played the majority of the game and led our team in points through each quarter. Go Lions!

The Crestwood Boys’ Junior Prep Basketball team went to 2-0 over the past weekend at the P.O2.NY Tournament in Erie, Pennsylvania.  The boys started off their weekend with a hard fought win over the hosts, McDowell High School. The game was back and forth throughout, before McDowell took a 6 point lead with 5 minutes left in the fourth quarter. A furious comeback gave CPC a 1 point lead with less than 2 minutes remaining. The teams traded baskets before Matthew Nelsons finished an “and-1” offensive rebound with 12 secs left to give the Lions a 2 point lead. McDowell missed their 3-point attempt at the buzzer, and Crestwood was victorious 56-54. In Game 2, the Crestwood Juniors took on Andrews Osborne Academy out of Ohio. The boys were dominant on their way to a 56-29 win, with several dunks and great effort plays throughout the game. The wins move the Junior Prep team to a record of 17-2 on the season.

The Junior Boys’ Basketball team moved to 8-0 in CISAA action with a 74-44 win over Upper Canada College on Wednesday. K’Shawn Latty led the way with 20 points, including 4 3-pointers in the first quarter. Caiden Oshinowo hit 4 triples as well on route to 14 points, while Matthew Nelsons added 12 points and Jaden Langley-Thomas 11. All players gave great effort and energy as it was truly a “team” victory. The Lions will be back in action with two home games next week: Monday versus Appleby and Wednesday against St. Mike’s.

On Wednesday afternoon the Crestwood Lions Sr. Boys’ D2 Basketball Team traveled to Trinity College and came away with a commanding victory.  The Lions never lost the lead throughout the entire game, beating Trinity College 35 to 50.  A special mention goes out to Derek Boecker with is 3 point shooting and play at the point guard position.  Congrats Lions.

Thursday the Crestwood Lions Sr. Boys’ Prep Team traveled to Central Tech and what a game they played.  Throughout the first half our Lions traded the lead with the Central Tech Blues and finished off the half up by 1 point, 49 to 48.  However due to a few heart gripping turnovers in the 3rd our Lions lost the lead and had to battle back in the 4th quarter. The lead gained by the Blues in the 3rd was insurmountable and our Lions lost a well played game 89 to 110. Special mention goes to Luis the Rebounding Monster Pacheco with his crowd pleasing put back dunk and the Jr. Lions: K’Shawn Latty, Matthew Nelson, Elijah Fisher and Jaden Langley- Thomas who all stepped up big to help our Sr. Boys as many of them battled the flu and injury.

Hockey

The Crestwood U-14 hockey game had a stellar 7-3 victory Wednesday night versus Sterling Hall. The entire team came together with an aggressive offense and air tight defence, bringing energy and ambition throughout the entire game. Eric Chen put on another incredible show last night, scoring 5 goals and defensively shutting down multiple opportunities from the opposition. Liam Wagner, Mateo Rocha and Aidan Takes all found their way to the score sheet. Crestwood also put on a parade to the penalty box due to our aggressive play. A great game was had by Jayden Bennett, turning away a plethora of shots throughout. Good work Lions!

Thursday night the Varsity Hockey Team took on Nichols School in a hard fought battle.  Unfortunately, we weren’t able to find the back of the net.  On a positive note, Mr. V and Mr. T do want to give praise to the entire team for keeping their composure during an unexpected physical game.

Volleyball

Despite the loss, the U14 Girls’ Volleyball had a successful and fun time during their tri-tournament yesterday evening at Toronto Montessori School. Crestwood’s girls strived for ensuring their court play matched their energized cheers. For their first game, Crestwood battled it out all the way to a third match against Trinity College. They won the first match 27-25, lost the second 20- 25 and struggled to keep momentum going into the third.  Against TMS, the girls put up a good fight losing the first game with a score of 24- 26. Unfortunately, the girls couldn’t come together on the last match. The close scores were due to the girl’s determination, great bumps, and consistent serves. Shoutout for the funniest moment thus far goes to Lauren Jazzhands Levinsky for her sprint off of the court in an effort to run away from the ball in fear when it seemingly grew teeth. Shoutouts to Laughy Taffy Abby Mintz for her consistent serves and bumps and Towering Tinamarie Otchere for her consistent cheering and energy.
