Hockey
Monday night the Varsity Hockey Team traveled to Richmond Hill to take on HTS in their second game of the season and the team did not disappoint. Led by Chuckie Nogas with his hat trick and another multiple point by Cole Eichler, the team cruised to an 8-2 win. Roy Pecjinovski had another stellar game as well as many others on both the defensive and offensive ends of the ice.
Wednesday night the Varsity Hockey Team played their first home game of the season and didn’t look to disappoint. Although the team took a little while to warm up in a very cold Fenside Arena, they took the lead late in the first period and never looked back. Behind another solid performance by Roy Pecjinovski in net and multiple point games by Samantha Mintz, Andrew Haynes, Cole Eichler, Christian Campanelli, Jacob Hanning and Aidan Lieberman, the Lions defeated TCS, 9-2. Great play by all and we’ll see you in the new year for our next game on Jan. 10 when we travel to SJKS.
The U-14 hockey game took a 7-0 loss on the chin Monday night against Appleby College. Short one of their strongest players due to injury, the team was not able to find the back of the net and was shutout by a strong opposition.
Curling
On Friday, our 1st and 2nd year curlers descended on the CISAA bonspiel for new curlers, including curlers from our Varsity Boys and Open teams led by first-time-skip Jacob Reinish, and our entire U14 team skipped by William MacInnis. Dominating two games and winning a third, they snapped up 3rd and 2nd place respectively and only missed out on 1st place by the barest of margins. With new blood like this, the future of Crestwood Curling is in good hands!
On Monday evening, all three of Crestwood’s curling teams traveled to Leaside Curling Club to do battle against the teams from the York School. The U14 squad went into action hoping to continue their undefeated streak. Despite jumping out to an early lead, the team was unable to hold off a late comeback, and lost by 1 after a heartbreaking final end. The Open Team had more success, as skip Will Dennison, vice Lyndsay McCulloch along with rookies Peter Hu and Cindy Wang kept getting better with each end, defeating York School 9-3. Lastly, the Varsity Boys notched their first win of the season with a solid 7-5 victory. Congratulations Crestwood curlers!
Basketball
The Junior Boys’ CISAA basketball team won 44-39 over Appleby College on Monday afternoon. The Crestwood defense was tremendous in the first half as the Lions led 32-3 at the break, giving up only one basket the entire first half. The second half was a complete switch though, as the Lions were outscored 36-12. K’Shawn Latty and Matthew Nelsons led the way in the first half with 24 combined points, while Cameron Frank showed some impressive finishing inside on the way to 4 points. The win moved the Crestwood Juniors to 3-0 in CISAA action.
The Junior Boys’ CISAA basketball team picked up a huge win over previously undefeated Hillfield Strathallan College by a score of 56-39 on Wednesday afternoon. The boys got off to a bit of a sloppy start and trailed 7-4 early in the first quarter before a switch to a 1-3-1 zone stifled HSC. The Lions led 12-7 at the end of the 1st quarter and never looked back, increasing the lead to 12 points at halftime and 21 at the end of the third. Matthew Nelsons put in an incredible performance with 24 points and several huge dunks, including an alley-oop from K’Shawn Latty to start the second half. K’Shawn himself showed some great leadership skills and tallied 19 points on a variety of pull-ups and tough finishes. Some much needed scoring help was provided by Caiden Oshinowo as he added 7 points, including a huge 3-pointer right before halftime. A big shoutout to Jesse Codron who showed outstanding toughness and hustle off the bench, stopping several fast breaks and forcing two jump balls. The win moves the Lions to 4-0 and gives them sole possession of first place in the Junior Division 1 CISAA standings. The Crestwood Juniors will be back in action at home Monday, December 18 against Crescent at 4:30pm.
This past weekend our Lady Lions traveled to Washington D.C and put on an amazing show. Game one we faced off against Victoria Basketball out of Australia. This team had good size and shooting, but despite that, the Lions were able to walk away with a comfortable win. On day two our Lions were faced with a much tougher matchup. We were pinned against arguably the number 1 team in Canada, Lincoln Prep. After a slow start, the Lions settled in and began to show what they were made of. Behind the leadership of Shayeann Day-Wilson and Areej Burgonio the Lions were able to secure the win down the stretch. On day three the Lions faced a young St. John’s which the Lions ran over by 20 points. The Lions left DC 3-0 and look to continue their streak this weekend as they do battle with Capital Courts Academy out of Ottawa. The game will be this Sunday at 1:00 pm at Crestwood.
Volleyball
The U14 Girls’ Volleyball played a mini-tournament Monday afternoon against Pickering College and Greenwood. Although they did not manage a win, they maintained a positive attitude and competitive spirit. Their teamwork and hustle for every ball was impressive, way to go ladies! Shoutouts this morning go to Isabelle Rigny for some powerful passes off of hard serves and Taylor Howell for her soaring sets.
The U14 Girls’ Volleyball team showed immense improvement in their game against The York School Wednesday evening. After losing the first set 25-14, the Crestwood girls were motivated to come back and won the second set 25-17! After battling it out during the third set, The York School snagged the win with a final score of 25-22. The Crestwood girls took to the court with increased energy skills, and cheers. Shoutouts go to Saleah Joseph for the energy she brought to the court and her hops at the net and Jordan Fischtein for her consistent passes. Way to go girls!
This Monday, the Junior Girls’ Volleyball team travelled to Albert College. Playing with a shortened bench, the girls put in a valiant effort against the home team. The serving of Maya Berger and Faith Joseph and the hustle of Maggie Funnell and Rachel Mintz kept all the games close. But in the end, we just could not overcome the challenge.
