The Crestwood Senior Wind Ensemble participated in a music festival and competition hosted by Festivals of Music on April 15th to 19th in Nashville, Tennessee. Amid stiff competition from participating high schools from both the USA and Canada, they distinguished themselves by winning a Bronze trophy.
Apart from performance, the group of 25 students from grades 10-12, were able to see many of the unique sights that Nashville has to offer. We went on a tour of RCA Studio B, where famous artists such as Elvis Presley, Dolly Parton, Roy Orbison and the Everly Brothers recorded many of their hit records.
Another memorable sight included an evening at the classic Grand Ol’ Opry, which is one of the oldest live radio broadcasts in existence, still broadcasting 3 times a week with live musical acts, an announcer, host and a studio audience. It was amazing to see the skill and talent of these musicians performing live over the airwaves.
Other impressionable memories include visits to the old Belle Meade Plantation that had been restored to its former glory, The Hermitage (Home of President Andrew Jackson), The Nashville Zoo, the Ryman Auditorium, the Country Music Hall of Fame and a walk along Broadway, where literally dozens of honky tonk clubs had live bands playing from 10 AM into the wee small hours of the morning. No wonder they call Nashville “Music City USA”.
