Youth Assisting Youth – Volunteer Opportunity

Become a mentor for kids in need! Youth Assisting Youth of YAY (https://youthassistingyouth.com/) pairs at-risk children ages 6-15 with older youth mentors ages 16-29. These mentors provide guidance and support to kids in need of a positive role model. Our goal is to help the children in our community feel more confident in themselves and to give them friends that change their lives for the better!

Responsibilities

  • You will share experiences, skills, and hobbies and inspire a younger youth to help them develop their confidence and independence
  • Partake in your favourite hobbies with your mentee! You can play sports or video games, teach them how to draw or play an instrument, or just spend time talking about life
  • Mentors will be required to meet with their mentees in person. We also host online programming to keep our community connected, including cooking classes, Kahoot! Trivia Nights, and other exciting events!

What Kind of Mentors Do We Need?

  • Our kids have a diverse range of interests, so we look for mentors with similar hobbies. Want to connect with a fellow gamer? There’s a mentee for you! Do you enjoy sports, or maybe the arts? There’s a mentee for you too!
  • Experience with kids, including ones diagnosed with mental illness or learning disabilities, is an asset
  • We welcome racialized applicants including Black Canadians, persons with disabilities, people who identify as LGBTQ+, and Indigenous peoples to apply for the position.
  • We have a high need for male mentors across the GTA and York Region, who could be positive role-models for younger male youth in a one-on-one setting.
  • We are looking for LGBTQ+ young adults in the midtown/downtown area to mentor young LGBTQ+ kids in Toronto.

Volunteer Requirements

  • You must be between the ages of 16-29 years of age
  • You must be able to commit to being a mentor for at least a full year, and can spend 3 hours of your week with your mentee (hours must be done concurrently)
  • You must be able to provide 2 Canadian professional references (employers, volunteer supervisors, teachers/professors, etc.)
  • You must be living in the City of Toronto (Downtown, North York, Scarborough, and Etobicoke) or York Region during the volunteer commitment
  • You must be willing to complete a Police Vulnerable Sector Screening
  • You must have received two doses on the COVID-19 Vaccine and be willing to provide proof of vaccination
