Curling
Our U14 curling team defeated TMS Wednesday in a close first game at the Royal Canadian Curling Club. Our boys came back from behind to tie it up in the sixth and final end, causing an exciting draw-to-the-button tie-breaker shot. William MacInnis threw a perfect stone which was also swept to perfection by his team (Tony Qi, Tony Qu, and Cole Luepann), stopping dead centre on the button and taking the game!
Crestwood debuted two new skips in Bradford Wednesday against SAC. Adam Golden, a five year veteran of the Crestwood curling program, took the helm for Crestwood’s Varsity Boys’ Team. Meanwhile, Will Dennison called the shots for Crestwood’s Open Team. While Saint Andrews prevailed in both games, the future looks bright for Crestwood’s curling program.
Volleyball
The U14 Girls’ Volleyball Team had their first game Wednesday, at Crestwood, against St. Johns-Kilmarnock School. After losing the first set 12-25, the girls started to get a handle on the second set by upping their communication, passing, and serving game resulting in a closer score of 18-25. Considering it was their first game, the girls played well and demonstrated great teamwork. Shoutouts go to Ella Lee-O’Rourke for her fierce serves and sneaky tips and Ryann Hiltz for hustling to get every ball. Good luck on your mini tournament Monday, ladies!
This Wednesday, the Junior Girls’ Volleyball Team faced off against SJK. Coming off a season opening loss, the ladies were really focused on showing their real potential on the court. The first game was back and forth with our ladies winning a close 25-21 affair. The next two games were an amazing display of serving and relentless defense as Crestwood won them 25-6 and 25-11. Special acknowledgments must go out to the serving of both Latasha Lattimore and Zakayla Day-Burrell who both served for more than 10 points in a row in both of the last two games. Also, the accurate passing of Maya Berger enabled our setters to make precision passes for our hitters. Great job ladies.
The Senior Girls’ Volleyball Team won their first game of the season on Monday December 4th with a convincing straight set victory over Bayview Glen. It was a complete team effort that was highlighted by great serves by Alex Sanders, Winnette Walters and Areej Burgonio, great defence by Sacha Snyder and Jahnai Brown as well as dominant attacks by Rachel Pape. Great job CPC, let’s keep it up.
Hockey
The U-14 Hockey Team had their first game Monday vs. Greenwood, dropping their season opener 6-5. The team came out with a very slow start, falling 3-0 in the first period. A heroic effort by Eric Chen rushing from the defensive position scored 4 miraculous unassisted goals, with Mateo Rocha popping in a beauty wrist shot from the slot. Tied 5-5, the effort fell just short as Greenwood snuck in a scramble in front of the net to win the game in the dying minutes of the third. Great effort boys, we will get them next time!
The U-14 Lions’ Hockey Team had a beautiful 6-3 win over De La Salle Wednesday night, with the entire team coming together with a fantastic all around effort. Our defensive line had a huge offensive game with Eric Chen scoring 2 and Phillipe Stroganov popping in one and an assist! Goalie Jayden Bennet was able to gobble up a whole bunch of pucks, ensuring no rebounds and keeping shots out of the net. Great efforts by Noah Halili, Mateo Rocha, Aidan Takes and Dylan Wilkinson, who all found their way onto the score sheet. Awesome work boys. Our next match is on Monday when we travel to Appleby. Keep up the good work!
The Varsity Hockey Team took to the ice Wednesday in their first game of the regular season and did not disappoint. Right from the get go, the team used their speed, skill and determination to take a commanding lead and never looked back in their 10-1 defeat of RSGC. Get play by all, saw the entire team make the score sheet with either a goal or an assist. Special mentions goes out to Roy Pecjinovski for another spectacular game in net and to Cole Eichler, Sam Li, Christian Campanelli, Andrew Haynes, Sean Zelman and Lorenzo Mancini for multi-point games. Keep up the good work, your coaching staff is very proud of you.
Swimming
Our U14 swimmers made a splashing debut into the world of swim meet. This is the first time where not a single swimmer was disqualified after their event. Amy Cai took the diving block like a champ. Our relay team of Chloe Werkin, Ben Davidson, James Gillingham, and Zach Black swam their best and beat last year’s team time. We may be a small team but we are mighty. Great job, swimmers!
Basketball
Tuesday afternoon, Crestwood’s U14 Boys’ Basketball Team traveled to St. Michael’s College and returned with their second win of the season defeating St. Mike’s 67-46. Both teams worked hard, but the Lions closed in and worked together to take over the court. Special mention to Mikkel Tyne for some amazing steals and impressive moves through the game. Come out and support our team next Wednesday for our home game against Hillfield after school. Go Lions!
The Crestwood Junior Prep Boys’ Basketball Team finished as runners-up of the Thornlea Thunder Junior Invitational this past weekend with a record of 4-1. The Juniors won pool B on Friday with wins over John Polanyi 58-46, Jean Vanier 81-54, and Martingrove 88-35. In the semifinals on Saturday, the boys pulled out a big 75-67 win over St. Mike’s before falling to the hosts, Thornlea, 68-55. The boys welcomed two new players to the squad; Zack Graff and Jonas Weissland who put up high point totals of 8 and 5 against Martingrove, while Pharaoh Wendt added 2 points and a sweet behind the back assist to Zack Graff. Imani Mighty and Armani Mighty put up career highs of 8 and 12 against Jean Vanier, and Caiden Oshinowo provided great depth off the bench and scored in 3 of our 5 games. Our starters, Matthew Nelsons, K’Shawn Latty, Jaden Langley-Thomas, Elijah Fisher, and Mikkel Tyne each scored in double figures multiple times over the course of the weekend and wowed the crowd many times with several dunks, an alley-oop, crossover step-backs, and a variety of other big plays. A big congratulations goes out to Jaden Langley-Thomas who was named co-MVP of the tournament.
The Junior Boys’ CISAA Basketball Team won 67-43 over Upper Canada College in the second game of their CISAA D1 season Monday evening. The boys got off to a hot start and led 39-18 at the break, before increasing the lead to as much 30 in the 2nd half. K’Shawn Latty led the way with 18 points, while Jaden Langley-Thomas added 17, and Matthew Nelsons pitched in 12 despite all 3 not playing in the 4th quarter. Other starters, Caiden Oshinowo and Armani Mighty added 5 points and 1 point respectively, while Imani Mighty added 2 points off the bench. Four players scored their first points of the season, with Michael Kim and Michael Steinberg both hitting 3-pointers, Peter Peng adding 4 points inside, and Denny Deng with a 2 point putback. The win moves the Junior squad to 2-0 on the season. The boys will head to Appleby College next Monday in hopes of winning their third straight game.
The Senior Boys’ Division II Basketball Team started off their season Wednesday. The boys got off to a slow start against an experienced Holy Trinity school down 26-23 at halftime. Crestwood tied up the game heading into the fourth quarter. They had a slow start to begin the fourth quarter, falling down 12 points with just under 4 minutes to play. They continued to battle but ultimately fell short with a final score of 56-50 in favour of Holy Trinity School. Shoutouts go to Kabier Izzeldin who was a defensive presence all game, Aren Karshafian for his clutch three pointers, Michael Di Battista for his hustle plays and David McCall who scored a game high 21 points. Next Monday, they play their first home game of the season.
The Crestwood Boys’ Prep Team went 2-3 at the NPA Prep League session #1 in Ottawa. It was Jahcobi Neath’s first game back while Franco Miller Jr led the team in scoring and Luis Pacheco Jr led in rebounding. Crestwood will be hosting the NPA Prep League session#2 in Toronto Jan 3-6. The Boys’ Prep Team recently played their first NPA Prep League South Division game vs TBA Academy to 87-80 lost. They bounced back on Wed Nov 29th when the Sr Elite team beat rival St Mike’s for the first time in the school’s basketball history. Great job, more to come!
