Chess Club

On Friday, October 30th, four members of the Crestwood Chess Club competed in the Toronto Secondary School Chess League Individual Championship at the University of Toronto School.  The 50 competitors in the event ranged in age from Grades 5 to Grade 12 and included two members of Canada’s national age-level chess teams.  There were five sets of matches over the course of the day for a total of seven and a half hours of chess!

Crestwood’s team of Justin Liang, Guanghao Chen, Sean McNamara and Russell Kaufman represented four of our top five players on the Crestwood Chess Club ladder, and all of our members played well.  Sean, the only member of our team with previous competitive experience, got the day started with a strong win in his first match.  Russell used his decisive and aggressive style to play to a win and a draw over the course of the day.  Guanghao played through some frustrating matches to earn a win in his third match.  But it was Justin who used his careful, methodical approach to checkmate two of his opponents and earn Crestwood’s strongest performance of the day.

The Club looks forward to further out-of-school tournament experience over the course of the year, and will continues ladder play at lunch. It’s not too late to join, so see Mr. Jull for more details.
