On Wednesday April 1st, Ms. Reay’s grade 12 visual arts class visited the Ontario Art Gallery and attended the Jean-Michel Basquiat exhibit: “Now’s the Time”. Students brought art history lessons to life, as they participated in a docent guided tour of Basquiat’s body of work, during which themes of race, struggle and power shaped lively conversations about the raw, street-wise style of the 1980’s New York art scene. Afterwards, inspired by Basquiat’s work, students created expressive wire “selfie” sculptures. The day was a wonderful capstone to the art history unit, as students enjoyed the gallery experience.
