Marcel Sauve was born March 27, 1931 in Montreal. He grew up in Verdun during the war years and when he was old enough he decided to join the Canadian army, going into the Royal 22nd Regiment – or the Van Doos. Marcel made the army his career as he served 24 years and rose to the rank of captain, which included deployments in Africa. Marcel served in Ghana in the early 1960s, when he helped to train the army of then PM Kwame Nkumrah. Other deployments included peacekeeping in Cyprus, as well as overseas postings in Germany and England, where he was part of the NATO contingent. He also married Shirley, and together the two of them found their place in postwar Canada. Marcel Sauve was interviewed by Scott Masters at his home in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec in March 2026.
