Greaves, Ian

Ian Greaves was born May 28, 1949 in Wood Hall Spa, England. He grew up in that small community which was near to many of the bomber bases from the Second World War; many of Ian’s family members had served in the military during that war, and several had been radio operators.  Ian eventually chose to follow in their footsteps when it came time for him to make a career choice, and he took a job with Marconi, where he was part of the Merchant Navy.  Ian sailed on many ships, transporting all kinds of cargo, and he was able to visit many ports-of-call.  Along the way Ian experienced heavy weather and he met many interesting people from cultures all around the world, including his future wife, a young lady from Montreal.  Ian also served alongside crews from around the world during his many years on the ships.  Nowadays Ian lives in southern Ontario, and he maintains his maritime connection through his volunteer work on HMCS Haida.  Ian Greaves was interviewed by Scott Masters at Legion Branch 60 in Burlington, Ontario, courtesy of the Burl-Oak Naval Veterans, and this video was edited by Crestwood student Charlie Levy.
